If big, juicy, flavour packed reds are your thing, then the wines of Yecla in eastern Spain are a must taste. Old plantings of local star Monastrell (aka Mourvèdre) produce intensely concentrated dark fruit flavours with characterful wild herb notes.

The Wine
Spain’s wines have never been better value, and little known regions like Yecla are especially worth exploring. This characterful red is from Bodegas Castaño, listed in Oz Clarke’s Grapes and Wines as one of Spain’s best producers of Monastrell. Their arid vineyards produce tiny yields – only around 25 hectolitres per hectare (even Cru Classé Bordeaux vineyards produce around 45 hectolitres) but key to the superb concentration in this wine. The grapes for Gran Calero were selected from 30 year old vines that dig deep into the stony soil, picking up subtle minerally complexity in their thirst for moisture. Gentle oak ageing and a splash of rare Petit Verdot has added spicy richness to this red – a great match for lamb or herby casseroles.
