The Wine
For superb quality wines at impressively low prices a key destination is Spain’s Valdepeñas region, described by The Independent as home to “outstanding reds, which can be serious bargains”. Castillo Armado pays homage to the area’s famous castles, built in the 8th century atop the large rock formations of the central plains. It’s from a cellar that can boast original vines dating back to 1904 – you’ll notice that in the intensity of the wines. Scottish winemaker Pamela Geddes combined the fruit of these ancient treasures with some from more recent plantings to produce a richly flavoured red with great complexity and exuberant fruit. Matured for three years in oak, this red is a real treat with roast pork, wild boar sausages or cured meats.
