The Wine
Not only can this estate boast appealing, ripe clarets, but it’s packed full of history, too. There’s evidence of it as a Roman villa, with relics bearing the image of Vespasian, emperor from AD 69 to AD 79. For many years now Château d’Augan has been owned by the Mercadier family, proud vignerons behind this extremely tasty red. The property lies in the Entre Deux Mers, just on the other side of the Dordogne from Saint Emilion. Like its neighbour, Entre Deux Mers favours the Merlot grape, which shone in 2015. Complemented by the two Cabernets and assisted by the favourably sunny conditions of the vintage, this Bordeaux has lovely creamy plum fruit with a touch of deeper cassis. Versatile with food – from roast meats to vegetarian chilli.
