The Wine
Château La Clarière has been described by Decanter as a “leading estate in the Côtes de Castillon”. Not a bad accolade for a chap who started out 40 years ago ferrying wine from Bordeaux to a shop under a railway arch in Windsor! It’s very modestly priced considering its provenance, too. As Wine International wrote, “If it wasn’t for the line dividing Castillon from Saint Emilion, its wines would be twice the price. The hills are the same, the soil is the same, the exposure is the same.” Haut Brion trained Jean Marc Sauboua is winemaker and he certainly was impressed by the quality of 2009. Part aged in new oak in its cool cellars, the wine’s velvety fruit is flattered by subtle, toasty vanilla flavours. Excellent with roast beef or lamb.
