Château Malescasse 2004
Haut-Médoc AOC Cru Bourgeois
Loading...
The deep, chalky soils of Château Malescasse produce Cabernet dominated clarets of real intensity and power. The 2004 is just reaching its apogee – lovely dense cassis fruit, wrapped in subtle oak and with firm tannins, almost Pauillac in style.

The Wine
Malescasse presents the ideal model of a Médoc château – doll’s house perfect with symmetrical wings flanking a formal front courtyard and a very classical frontage. It has had many owners since it was founded in 1824, but for the last 20 years has belonged to a French telecom company that can afford whatever it takes to make top notch wine. It lies close to the town of Lamarque, its 37 hectares of vines forming the high point, altitudinally, of this part of the Haut-Médoc. Near equal portions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot plus Cabernet Franc make for a rich styled claret with firm tannins for ageing. Over a year’s maturation in 25% new barrels lends a definite layer of oak. An impressive claret ageing gracefully – ideal with red meat.
