The Wine
For a crisp white – somewhere in style between Sauvignon and Pinot Grigio – search out Picpoul. It’s grown in Pinet, in the very south of France, and has recently come into its own. One of the most successful estates is Château Saint Martin de la Garrigue, with 63 hectares of vines, surrounded by pine and olive trees, and wild herbal garrigue. All flavours you may pick up in this crisp white. It’s one of the most beautiful estates in the Languedoc, complete with a Renaissance château and 9th century chapel. The property’s vineyards comprise 50 different plots, growing a total of 17 grape varieties. This particular gem was awarded the Coup de Coeur by Bettane & Desseauve, and was numbered among the Top 10 Languedoc wines by Tim Atkin MW.

Fresh, sappy, lemony white, sometimes with a seemingly saline edge – goes very well with seafood
