The Wine
Kalleske has been around since 1853, so why have you never heard of it? Because the family only grew grapes before brothers Troy and Tony Kalleske studied winemaking, gained experience at home and abroad, then built the family winery in 2002. The Kalleskes came to Australia in 1838 from Prussia. Today their 48 hectares are certified organic or biodynamic, and their oldest vines date from 1875 (incidentally, Troy and Tony’s mum Lorraine still holds the title of fastest grape picker in Australia, won in the 1980s). This single vineyard Shiraz is made using open fermenters, wild (naturally present) yeasts, and a basket press – a traditional approach that ensures supple tannins and loads of character. Decant and serve with a juicy T-bone steak.
