The Wine
Here’s a fantastic find from ancient Roquemaure, in the southern Rhône, close to Châteauneuf. It lies within Lirac, an appellation recognised in 1947 and today with an excellent reputation for its reds. Like this silky 2015, Lirac’s reds tend to have a higher proportion of Syrah and Mourvèdre, with a pleasing firmness to match. Our buyer loved the quality of this wine – as good as a Châteauneuf, but with a pleasingly modest price tag. Crafted from the hand picked fruit of old vines planted on ancient alluvial terraces, this Rhône red is lithe and spicy with lively red and black fruits, soft, well integrated tannins, and complexity – attributes that saw it take Gold at Avignon’s prestigious wine show. A great match for game casserole.
