The Wine
Oz Clarke lists Quinta do Casal Branco among Portugal’s top producers of the “aromatic and very versatile” Fernão Pires grape (in Grapes and Wines). Here, blended with Sauvignon Blanc, Fernão Pires makes an incredibly refreshing garden white or mealtime partner to seafoods and salads. Quinta do Casal Branco is a beautiful old aristocratic estate on the east bank of the river Tagus, just north of Lisbon. The property has been in the same family for 200 years and used to be a favourite retreat of Portugal’s royal family. Today its winemaker is João Ramos, “one of the foremost figures in the regeneration of Portuguese wine” according to Wine magazine. Portuguese wine sales are racing ahead so if you’ve yet to discover why, just try this.
