The Wine
Rainha do Mar means Queen of the Sea, and in terms of sheer seafood matching class this wine really does reign supreme. It’s made from the aromatic and versatile Fernão Pires grape, from the Setúbal Peninsula. Centuries ago, Vasco da Gama set sail from here and discovered the sea route to India. Today it’s better known as a surfers’ paradise and a winemakers’ nirvana. A sunny climate and cooling ocean breezes provide perfect grape growing conditions and draw top winemaking talent, notably multiple award winning Jaime Quendera. His delightful Rainha do Mar is deliciously fresh and crisp and ideally suited to seafood – a prominent feature on local menus. Serve it chilled like the locals do, with grilled sardines or prawns and a crisp salad.
