The Wine
The idea of the Selección Especial began a few years ago, when we snapped up someone else’s cancelled order at a knock-down price. We repeat the winning formula with this amazing Gran Reserva Rioja, aged for 36 months in fine oak. It’s from a quality estate which was originally established back in 1890. Everything about this wine exudes class. It was born in an excellent vintage, and the fruit was hand harvested and brought to the winery in small baskets. It’s now plump, spicy and fully mature, with notes of raspberry, plum, leather, tobacco, vanilla and cinnamon. To clear the last of this rare vintage they offered us a very tempting price. Be sure to decant this wine, and serve with a rich, herby casserole or roasted shoulder of lamb.
