True Vinho Verde like this is bright and very crisp, with appealing floral and herbal aromas and delicate fruit – a million miles from the versions of the 1970s. And with lower alcohol, 11–13°, Vinho Verde makes a deliciously appetising glassful. Tapada dos Marquês is from Cave de Campelo, a cellar established in 1951. A total refurbishment with the latest kit in recent years has ensured all the fruit and freshness is captured in their wines. They make a range of Vinho Verde, some with a blend of traditional grapes, while this is pure Loureiro. The grape’s name means laurel – its aromas are reminiscent of laurel flowers. With hints of apple, pear, apricot, and orange blossom too, this white is a delight. Perfect solo or with lighter dishes.
