The Wine
Albert Bichot’s Les Charmes in the top Mâcon village of Lugny really stands out in the generous and ripe 2014 vintage. It offers impressive value – hard to find sometimes in Burgundy. Les Charmes is a large, single vineyard nurturing a special Chardonnay clone distinguished by wine of exceptional aroma. This attribute is further enhanced by the local chalk and limestone soil. An idyllic southerly aspect and the age of the vines (around 40 years) explains the wine’s ripeness and intensity. Several growers make wine from this vineyard but Bichot’s is one of the best. Fresh, bright, pure and well balanced, this Les Charmes is lovely with fish and shellfish prepared simply or with creamy sauces. It’s also tasty with chicken and creamy cheeses.
