The Wine
Lying on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, between the prestigious appellations of Pomerol and Fronsac, Château Malfard is a multi award winning property. Its wines may only have a generic Bordeaux appellation but the quality of them is evident. The château had 60 hectares of vines (white) under cultivation in the 19th century, but was in a dreadful state of disrepair when Philippe Rivière bought it in 1999. The buildings had mostly collapsed and the vines were neglected. Philippe and his wife have worked exceedingly hard to restore both. Today there are 16 hectares of vineyards – mostly Merlot, with both Cabernets and some Petit Verdot – converted to organic viticulture since 2010. Aged for a year in oak, this is a silky, complex claret to savour.
