The Wine
Pauillac’s Château Pedesclaux was founded in 1810 by négociant Pierre Pedesclaux, who helped shape the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux. That said, the property’s vineyards were somewhat neglected over the decades until the Jugla family bought them in the 1950s. But it’s the man who took over in 2009 – Jacky Lorenzetti – who has really made a difference. Owner, too, of Lilian Ladouys, he has made a massive investment in the cellar and vineyards. He’s added 12 hectares of vines on the Milon plateau, next door to Lafite and Mouton Rothschild, reduced yields and totally modernised the winemaking facilities. Now an optical sorter ensures only 100% perfect grapes make it into the vat, while 60% new oak is used for ageing – a sure sign of quality.
