The Wine
Having a Buyer for Portugal who is Portuguese himself certainly seems to help in getting the inside track on the latest exciting wine deal. No wonder we’ve been awarded ‘Best Portuguese Wine Merchant’ twice. This is a new discovery for Hilario. It’s from a cellar in the Douro, home of course to the fortified wine port. This bodega was founded in 1960 and produces exclusively table wines. With the recent appointment of winemaker José Piteira, there’s been an impressive step up in quality. He works closely with the growers, each with their tiny patch of precipitously steep vineyard planted on the black schist (xisto preto) soil. Using noble grapes Touriga Nacional and Franca, and Tinta Roriz and Barroca, this red is deep, rich and fruity.
