The Wine
In wine they say the best way to make a small fortune is to start off with a large fortune. So you’d have to be an optimist (and a great winemaker) to follow in Bob Berton’s footsteps. As an accountant he used to advise on how to run businesses. But he had never run one. So he joined a winery to get some experience and never looked back, setting up on his own in 2006. He’s already gained a listing in James Halliday’s definitive Australian Wine Guide. As for Semillon, well, no variety is more closely aligned to Australia’s sense of individuality. Max Allen writes: “When Australia becomes a Republic, the wine we toast the new president with should be a Semillon.” And if we had our way, it’d be this one. Great solo or try with glazed ham.
